n this session we'll examine the key components to consider in crafting the opening arc of your novel. We’ll discuss questions like:
  • How do you establish a clear voice and tone?
  • What are the key genre markers you want to communicate to your reader?
  • What story promises are you making and how does that affect your overall structure?
  • What keeps a reader engaged and carries them through the long arc of your story?
We’ll also discuss general principles and examples from recent commercial fiction. Come prepared with some favorite opening lines and scenes from recently published works.
